From the Food Service Department:
By: Morgan Trahan, Director

In a continuing effort to encourage students to make healthy choices, the food service department offers a variety of healthy choices in the cafeteria.

Fresh apples, oranges and bananas are always available,as well as homemade trail mix. We offer reduced fat cookies, crackers, baked chips, pretzels and sunchips. All of our juices are 100% fruit juice and we have a variety of flavored waters and vitamin waters.

Our Salad Bar continues to be very popular and offers many healthy choices including lowfat cottage cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables. Low fat and skim milk is also offered as a beverage option.

Students are encouraged to use their student ID cards at the point of sale registers to expedite the transaction time. Money on account instead of cash also helps the lines move faster for break and lunch. Checks and cash are excepted at the register. Checks can also be mailed to the school (ATTN. Food Service Dept.). Please be sure to put your students name or ID # on the check in the memo section.

We know that growing active kids need calories, and it is our goal to help them make wise calorie choices.

The United States Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services, has recently updated the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines establish recommendations on diet changes that could bring about a healthy American diet. They call for moderation and the avoidance of extremes in diet.

We , the John Stark Food Service Department, are offering choices for students, including vegetarian options, and have increased the fruit, vegetable, and grain components in our meals.

A recent survey determined that our students are very aware of their nutritional needs. We take pride in the meals we prepare and serve to everyone at John Stark Regional. Our goal is to continue to satisfy student nutritional needs while maintaining our reputation of serving top quality meals in a friendly and pleasant environment.
The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans are as follows:

Aim for Fitness.
Aim for a healthy weight.
Be physically active each day.
Build a healthy base.
Let the food pyramid guide your daily food choices.
Choose a variety of grains daily, especially whole grains.
Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
Keep food safe to eat.
Choose sensibly.
